Two bills that would make it easier to build housing on commercial-zoned land are heading to the governor’s desk.

Assembly Bill 2011 and Senate Bill 6 both seek to spur the development of millions of potential new housing units by bypassing many steps of the local approvals process and making certain residential projects a by-right use of commercial properties primarily used for office, retail or parking.

Both bills passed their final hurdles in the Legislature on Monday, Aug. 29 and now go to the governor’s desk.
