Pressure is increasing on Elk Grove over its July rejection of an affordable housing project, with the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development issuing a warning letter this week.
The letter states the city didn’t follow state law in rejecting Oak Rose Apartments, a 67-unit proposal in the city’s Old Town area of permanent supportive housing for people who were formerly homeless.
“As the Project consists of fewer than 150 housing units, the City had 60 days from the date of submittal to provide the developer with its determination on the project’s inconsistency with SB 35’s objective planning standards,” the letter states, referring to Senate Bill 35. That’s a state law passed in 2017 to help affordable projects move forward.
