The new year will mean an answer will start forming to a question often asked these days about Downtown Sacramento: Why aren’t empty state office buildings being looked at for housing?
A new law, which takes effect Jan. 1, requires the California Department of General Services to research that very issue.
“My big focus is on the urban core,” said Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, who authored the law and whose district includes Downtown Sacramento, where most of the state-owned office buildings are concentrated. “You have high-profile buildings, big footprints, and people aren’t showing up at them as much anymore.”
