Three state-owned office buildings, all on Capitol Mall or a block away, have been identified as locations for conversion to housing.

The state of California’s Department of General Services and Department of Housing and Community Development are seeking a request for qualifications for developers interested in three Downtown Sacramento locations: 800 and 801 Capitol Mall, and 751 N St.

“In California, we are taking every opportunity and using every tool available to build more housing, faster — including reviewing our own portfolio of excess land to transform state property into housing,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement issued ahead of a planned news conference Tuesday afternoon at 801 Capitol Mall. “Our excess land strategy is part of a multipronged approach to tackle the housing crisis in California, which includes greater accountability, streamlining the building process and providing incentives along with unprecedented resources to communities willing to step up and meet their housing commitments.”
