Newly announced funding from the state’s Project Homekey will be used to turn two hotels, both on Howe Avenue, into affordable housing.

As part of $736 million statewide announced Wednesday, both the Arden Star Hotel in Arden-Arcade and Rodeway Inn in Sacramento will be taken over and converted by an affordable housing developer and a nonprofit service provider.

“The John Stewart Company is ready to move forward and hope to start their construction work by December,” said Jeff Swanson, general manager of the Arden Star, in an email. “It’s a bittersweet ending for us here, but my employees have been very patient and looking forward to starting the next chapters in their lives.”
