Von Friedrichs-Fitzwater’s relentlessness was driven by loss: Her grandson, Joshua, met a tragic end while living on the streets of Omaha, Nebraska. Von Friedrichs-Fitzwater wanted to forge an unconditional apparatus of comfort and dignity in her hometown of Sacramento, one that would also serve as a remembrance of her grandson’s life.
