Turning three state office buildings into housing is a step toward the future for revitalizing Downtown Sacramento, local leaders said Tuesday.

At a news conference outside one of those buildings, the California Employment Development Department headquarters at 800 Capitol Mall, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said it’s a step that acknowledges post-pandemic realities where more people work from home.

“The world has changed,” he said, speaking alongside Assemblymember Kevin McCarty and City Councilmember Katie Valenzuela. “People ask, ‘how do we transform Downtown Sacramento?’ and this is part of the answer.”
